Ethics, Being and Danger: Buddhist and Existentialist Approaches

Description

Theme:

Buddhist and existential thinkers (Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Arendt, Sartre and Beauvoir) start from the fundamental question of what it means 'to be' in this world.

Both are highly critical of traditional and overly rationalistic approaches to ethics, and attempt to provide better accounts of what it means to be human. They do so by articulating ethical perspectives that respect the individual, yet, are fundamentally concerned with the Other - both human and non-human - and the ethical value of an authentic, or an 'awakened' way of life.

Although Buddhism and existentialism are highly ethical in their orientation neither espouse ethical theories, but attempt to demonstrate ways in which we can respond to the varied and changing nature of the ethical situations that we find ourselves inhabiting. Some of the important questions that we will address are:

· How can we behave ethically in an ever-changing world?
· What does it mean to have ethics without a fixed 'self'?
· How can we live with ethical uncertainty?
· What is ethical responsibility?
· How does a sense of wonder contribute to our ethical approaches?
· What are the contemporary 'dangers' to living ethically?

Throughout the course, we will keep in view the practical nature of such questions; and how ethics constitute the heart of Buddhist and existential ways of being in this world.
